Learning how to do the four basic types of braids will provide you with endless possibilities for long or short hairstyles. These are basically the foundations of hairstyling. Below is a perfect step by step guide on hairstyles for girls.

Regular 3-Strand Braid

  1. Brush your hair to the back of your head, and divide it into three sections.
  2. Bring the right strand over the middle, so that it now becomes the middle strand.
  3. Then bring the left strand over the middle, so that it now becomes the middle strand.
  4. Keep repeating steps 2-3 until you get as close to the bottom of your hair as possible.
  5. Tie off your hair with a rubber band / ponytail.

French Braid

Now that you’ve learned how to do the basic 3-strand braid, it’s time to move onto a french braid. This is very similar to a regular braid, but instead of dividing all the hair at once, you’ll divide off a small section and add in hair the as you get further down in the braid.

  1. Section off some hair from the crown of your head.
  2. Divide that into 3 sections.
  3. Start off like a regular braid (right over middle, left over middle).
  4. When you get back to the right strand, grab some more hair from the right side and incorporate into the right strand.
  5. Then put the right strand over the middle.
  6. Next, take more hair from the left side and incorporate into the left strand.
  7. Put the left strand over the middle.
  8. Continue adding more and more hair the further you get down the braid.
  9. Tie off the end with a rubber band / ponytail.

Dutch Braid

Great job! You’ve now masted the regular and french braid. Next up, is a braid called the dutch braid (or reverse french braid). The great thing about this is that it is very similar to the french braid, but you get a completely different look.

  1. Section off some hair from the crown of your head.
  2. Divide that into 3 sections.
  3. Now, instead of taking the right strand over the middle strand, you need to put it under.
  4. Then move to the left strand, and put it under the middle.
  5. Now when you get back to the right strand, just like a french braid, you will incorporate more hair from the right side, and then take the right strand under the middle.
  6. Then repeat with the left strand. Incorporate more hair, and take the left strand under the middle.
  7. Keep repeating these steps until you get to the end of your hair.
  8. Tie it off with a rubber band / ponytail.

Fishtail Braid

The last type of braid is also a foundation, but it is very different from the other three braids above. The reason it is different is because it does not use 3 strands, but instead uses 2.

  1. Brush, and pull your hair to the back of your head.
  2. Divide you hair into 2 strands.
  3. Starting with the right strand, pull out of a smaller strand from the far right side of the right section.
  4. Bring that small strand over the right section and combine it with the left section.
  5. Then moving onto the left strand, pull out a smaller strand from the far left side of the left section.
  6. Bring that small strand over the left section and combine it with the right section.
  7. Repeat these steps until you get to the end of your hair.
  8. Tie off with a rubber band / ponytail.
